Léonie Mutoni – ACE-AJ Coordinator

Léonie leads the strategic coordination of the Centre’s activities in collaboration with its Founding Members. In this role, Leonie is responsible for driving ACE-AJ’s vision of advancing access to justice across Africa through regional collaboration, innovation, and capacity strengthening.

She oversees the Centre’s digital presence, managing its website and social media platforms to enhance visibility and engagement. Leonie also plays a key role in expanding ACE-AJ’s membership base and fostering strategic partnerships with institutions committed to justice sector reform.
Her coordination efforts include organizing cross-country exchanges, dialogues, and convenings that promote shared learning and collective advocacy. In addition, she leads fundraising efforts to sustain and scale the Centre’s impact, and supports various initiatives as delegated by the Founding Members.

She is also the Director of Programs at the Legal Aid Forum.

With a deep commitment to social justice and inclusive development, Leonie brings strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills to her work—ensuring that ACE-AJ remains a vibrant platform for advancing people-centered justice across the continent.

Brenda Batamuriza – Research Officer

Brenda oversees the production of both qualitative and quantitative research, coupled with legal and policy analysis that informs strategic advocacy aimed at influencing reforms and institutional practices. The findings are shared through published reports, policy briefs, public dialogues, media outreach, and direct engagement with government ministries, parliamentarians, and civil society actors.

She is also the Head of the Knowledge Management Unit at the Legal Aid Forum, where she leads initiatives in research, advocacy, and capacity building to advance human rights.

Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Rwanda and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD), Brenda is deeply committed to translating knowledge into action. She harnesses data, legal expertise, and community engagement to drive policy change and promote social justice, with a strong focus on equity and expanded access to justice in Rwanda.

Vanessa Bugingo – Administrative Assistant

Vanessa Bugingo is a dedicated development practitioner with a strong background in administrative and programmatic support. She holds an Associate’s Degree in Business Management and Entrepreneurship from Davis College and is currently pursuing a specialization in her Business Administration studies.

In her role as the Administrative Assistant at the African Centre of Excellence for Access to Justice (ACE-AJ), Vanessa supports the implementation of initiatives aimed at expanding access to legal services and promoting human rights, especially for vulnerable and underserved communities. Her responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and executing program activities and events; assisting in project monitoring and reporting; and maintaining effective communication with partners, beneficiaries, and other stakeholders.
Driven by a deep passion for human rights and social impact, Vanessa is committed to using her skills and experience to advocate for justice, equity, and sustainable development. She aspires to contribute to meaningful, lasting change in society through her work.
